 Instruction for Authors

  Journal of Iranian Clinical Research (JICR) is the official scientific quarterly publication of Arak University of Medical Sciences. It publishes original research papers, review articles, case reports, and letters to the editor. Submissions should conform to the "Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to medical journal, available at http://www.jicr.arakmu.ac.ir". Only those manuscripts are original that have not been published elsewhere, and are not currently being considered for inclusion in another publication will be considered for publication in" Journal of Iranian Clinical Research". Authors are advised to keep a copy of all manuscripts submitted. Abstract or press reports of presentations at scientific meetings will not be considered prior publication. The editorial will not enter into argument with authors about papers considered unsuitable for publication and their decisions final.

 Preparation of Manuscripts

  All manuscripts (meaning all submissions items, including all text, tables, artwork, cover letters, conflict of interest disclosures, and any other required materials) must be submitted on-line via journal URL: http://www.jicr.arakmu.ac.ir. The agreement of all authors to the submission should be noted. Manuscript must be accompanied by a covering letter to the Editor-in-Chief, including title and author(s) name and undertaking that it has not previously been published or submitted elsewhere.

 Covering Letter 

  All manuscripts must be accompanied by a cover letter signed by all authors. Please upload a cover letter as Word document. Other than any comment you would like to write to the editor, these issues must be addressed in this letter: any potential conflict of interest, sources of financial support of the study, any changes in the list and order of authors (if you are submitting a revised paper), and the name, address, telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address of the corresponding author. In the cover letter, you must also mention the names of three potential preferred referees that can be considered for reviewing your manuscript. In the event that an author is added or removed from the list of authors, written acceptance, signed by all authors, must be resubmitted to the editorial office.  

  • Authors are advised to write in clear and simple English.
  • A Manuscript should be typed in double space of A-4 size paper with clear margins on both sides (2.5 cm).
  • The text should be submitted in Microsoft Word only 12 font.

  Each of the following sections should start on a separate page:

  Abstract, text, references, tables, and figures legends.

  • Use metric units whenever practical.
  • All pages should be numbered, with the title page as page number one.
  • If the journal is from a thesis, it must be mentioned clearly at the end of the paper.
  • Paper can not be sent back.

 The first page or Title page

  The title page should include the full title of the manuscript (without abbreviation), full name, highest awarded academic degree and address (Tel, Fax, and E-mail) of each author.

 The second page or Abstract page

  An abstract should accompany each original article, review article. The abstract should be limited to 250 words and not less than 150 and should be presented in structured format as Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, and Conclusion following 3 to 10 keywords. It should describe the research purposes or motivation for the paper, the main findings or viewpoints and central conclusions. It should contain no references or abbreviations. It should be factual, and give quantified findings in preference to descriptive language. Authors need to be careful that the abstract reflects the content of the article accurately.

 Introduction

  This should summarize the purpose and the rationale for the study. It should neither review the subject extensively nor should it have data or conclusions of the study.

 Materials and Methods

  This must include exact method or observation or experiment. If the method is established, give reference but if the method is new, give enough information so that another author is able to perform. Study method, samples and sampling method and its related control methods should completely be described. Method must indicate clearly the steps taken to acquire the information. Data gathering methods and instruments must be described. Also, if needed, they must have references. Methods of determining validity and reliability must be attached. The used materials and instruments, and their manufactory must be named. Data analysis (including statistic methods) must be explained completely.

 Results 

  Results should be presented in chronological and reasonable sequence in the form of text, tables, diagrams or pictures. Tables and diagrams should be simple and should not duplicate information in the text of the paper. This section should not include material appropriate to the discussion. Results must be statistically analyzed where appropriate. In analytical studies and clinical trials, at first the case and the control group must be compared and then followed by the research findings.

 Discussion

  Data given in the Results should not be repeated here. This may include an evaluation of methodology and of the relationship of new information to the existing body of knowledge in that field. Discussion should emphasize the new and important aspects of the study and conclusions that follow them. Possible mechanisms or explanations for these findings should be explored. The viewpoints other than the study findings must be avoided. Study limitations and its generalization and the implications of the findings for the future research or clinical practice should be explored.

  Conclusions

 This should state clearly the main conclusions of the research and give a clear explanation of the important and relevance. Tables, Diagrams, and pictures must be presented in separate pages at the end of the paper. They must be numbered in the order in which they are cited in the text.

  Acknowledgements

 This optional part should include a statement thanking those who assisted substantially with work relevant to the study. Grant support must be included in this section. It should include persons who provided technical help, writing assistance and departmental head who only provided general support. Financial and material support should be acknowledged.

  References

References should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text. References should follow the Vancouver style. Identify references in text, tables, and legends by Arabic numerals in parentheses. References cited only in tables or figure legends should be numbered in accordance with the sequence established by the first identification in the text of the particular table or figure. References to papers or books accepted but not yet published should be designated as "in press". Authors should obtain written permission to cite such papers as well as verification that they have been accepted for publication. Information from manuscripts submitted but not accepted should be cited in the text as "unpublished observations" with written permission from the source. Avoid citing a "personal communication" unless it provides essential information not avoidable from a public source, in which case the name of the person and date of communication should be in parentheses in the text. Authors are responsible for the accuracy of references and must verify them against the original documents. References must be written carefully with the characteristic in following examples:

 Tables 

  Each table should be numbered and cited in sequence using Arabic numerals (i.e. Table1, 2, 3, etc.). Tables should also have a title (above the table) that summarizes the whole table. Detailed legend may then follow but they should be concise. Tables should supplement, not duplicate, the text. Tables considered to be integral to the manuscript can be posted into the end of the document text file, in A-4 portrait or landscape format.

  Figures and Pictures

  Figures and Pictures should be prepared in a professional manner. In all figures and pictures, words, numbers, and symbols should be in English and clear and large enough, so when they are getting small to be published still be readable. Their titles and explanations must be complete and out of figures and pictures. Original pictures must be sent. The number of the picture and its title must be attached in the back of the each picture. Pictures must not be adhered anywhere and also not folded.

  Case Reports

 A case report should include: Title, Abstract, Introduction, Case, Discussion and Conclusion.

  Abstract: The abstract (no more than 150 words) in structured format as background, case and conclusion followed by 3 to 6 keywords must be presented.

  Introduction: Introduction should include background, importance and causes of the case, followed by some previous statistics.

  Case: Should include detailed report of the history, clinical and preclinical findings, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of the individual patient.

  Discussion: The characteristics of the case are discussed. The results of the case are compared to similar results of other reports.

  Conclusion: Should include the final conclusion and suggestions.

  Review Articles

A review article should include: Title, Abstract, Introduction, Text, Conclusion, Acknowledgement and References. The first author of a review article must at least have three research articles relating the title. Review articles must have at least 30 references.

  Abstract: Including background, text, and conclusion followed by 3to 5 keywords must be presented.

  Introduction: Including authors' purpose of the review and the concept and fact which is going to be explained.

  Text: Should include an analysis and collection of the current state of the research on the topic and representing the main people working in a field, recent major advances and discoveries, significant gaps in the research, current debates, and ideas of where research might go next.

  Conclusion: Should include a summarization of facts and concepts in the text.

  Letters to the Editor

 In the spirit of open scientific dialogue, the Editor-in-Chief invites the submission of correspondence that persons considered opinions in response to articles published in the journal. Letters to the Editor will be received and, if found to meet the requisite publication criteria, may be sent to the author(s) of the originally published article and possibly to other interested parties for a response to be published in the same issue of the journal as the Letter. Letters should have a brief title that references the topic of the originating article, and Letters should not exceed 500 words, with 5 or fewer references and no tables or figures. Please include your complete mailing address, telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail address with your correspondence. The Editor reserves the right to shorten letters, delete objectionable comments, and make other changes to comply with the style of journal.

  Authorship

  All persons designated as authors should qualify for authorship. Based on the newly released Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical journals, by the ICMJE, "an author" is generally considered to be someone who meets the following conditions 1, 2, 3, and 4:

  1. Substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work; or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data for the work.

  2. Drafting the work or revising it critically for important intellectual content.

  3. Final approval of the version to be published.

  4. Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved.

  The journal has the right to edit, accept, or reject papers. Manuscripts will not be acceptable for publication unless they meet the following editorial requirements. Each of the following manuscripts should begin on a new page in the following sequence.

  The manuscripts should include: Title page, the Abstract, Introduction, Materials & Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgement and References.

  Ethical Considerations

  Ethical considerations will be taken into account in the assessment of papers that have experimental investigations of human or animal subjects. Authors should state in the Methods section of the manuscript that informed consent was obtained from all human adult participations and from the parents or legal guardians of minors and an appropriate institutional review board approved the project. Authors are responsible for the scientific and written accuracy of all parts of the paper. Manuscripts are considered with the understanding that they are submitted solely to the Journal of Iranian Clinical Research and have not been published elsewhere previously either in print or electronic format, and not under consideration by another publication or electronic medium. The final decision of acceptance rests with the Editor. The supporting organization must be disclosed. Also every organization or individual related to the research must be mentioned. Authors are responsible regarding any claims of individuals relating to the research. Corresponding author is responsible regarding any claims related to the editor's right.

  Conflict of Interest

   Authors must acknowledge and declare any sources of funding and potential conflicting interest, such as receiving funds or fees by, or holding stocks and shares, an organization that may profit or lose through publication of your paper. Declaring a competing interest will not lead to automatic reject of the paper, but we would like to be made aware of it.

  Copyright

The entire contents of the Journal of Iranian Clinical Research are protected under International copyrights. The journal is for your personal noncommercial use. You may not modify, copy, distribute, transmit, display, or publish any materials continued on the journal without the prior written permission of it or the appropriate copyright.

  Peer Review Process

  All manuscripts are considered to be confidential. They are peer-reviewed by at least 3 anonymous reviewers selected by the Editorial Board. The corresponding author is notified as soon as possible of the editor decision to accept, reject, or require modifications. If the manuscript is completely acceptable according to the criteria set forth in these instruments, it is scheduled for the next available issue. Journal has entire right for accept or reject organization, and published by authors do not accept responsibility for the statements expressed by authors in their contributions.

  Privacy Statement

  The names and e-mail addresses entered in this journal site will be used exclusively for the stated purposes of this journal and will not be made available for any purpose or to any party.

  Submission Preparation Checklist

  As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines:

  1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to Editor).

  2. The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or Wordperfect document file format.

  3. Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.

  4. The text is single-spaced; uses 12-point font; employs italics.

  The Final Checklist

The authors are requested to mark a copy of the following form and attach it to the covering letter:

    • The manuscript has been read and approved by all listed authors.

    • Title page contains the title, name(s), degree(s), affiliation(s) and addresses, Tel, Fax, and E-mail of the author(s).

    • Abstract is in structured format that mentions Introduction, Materials & Methods, Results, Conclusion and Keywords.

    • Figures / illustrations are in high quality art work, along with their captions .

    • Bibliographical references are mostly up-to-date and are numbered consecutively as they occur in the text and at the end of the manuscript are numbered accordingly.
